Three Important Aspects in Academic Speaking Presentation

English is a foreign language that requires four language skills to be taken into account. Those skills are writing, reading, listening and speaking. Amongst those four skills, speaking takes place in daily life of the college students who are majoring in English. The English students apply their speaking skill to communicate each other and to deliver an academic presentation. In this case, the English students will deal with some aspects in speaking for academic presentation which should be concerned. The aspects are important in order to have good academic speaking presentation. Therefore, there are three aspects that English students should concern about, such as topic of academic presentation, pronunciation in English and the use of vocabulary along with grammar. 

As the first to be mentioned, topic of academic presentation is an important aspect that should be given some attentions. The English students, who will deliver their academic presentation in the classroom or in formal meeting, have to decide the topic for the presentation before. To decide a topic for academic presentation, the English students need to consider the speaking situation. Speaking situation can be the audience or listeners, the time limits and the occasion. The topic should be interesting and have a specific purpose to be announced, so that the audience or listeners can catch the meaning of presentation. In addition, for the English students, topic is the way to show how much the knowledge that students have. In planning the presentation, the student needs to be able to find as much as the information for the presentation. Thus, the English students must know what subject that they are capable to explain and deliver to the audience. Besides that, the English students must enjoy their academic presentation by having a topic that they mostly interested in. It will be more helpful for them to deliver a good speech in academic presentation.

The next aspect in academic speaking presentation is pronunciation which needs to be concerned as the way how the English students pronounce the word or phrase. Pronunciation is important in order to deliver the right meaning of a word or phrase. Missing pronunciation will make miss understanding of the meaning of the words or phrases. For example, the pronunciation of leave and live will be similar if the students do not pay more attention on it. The pronunciation is always the important aspect in academic presentation because there are some unfamiliar terminologies which may have difficult pronunciation in speech.  If the terminology or some words that is pronounced unclearly, the audience will not be able to catch the meaning and get misunderstanding. The importance of pronunciation is also stated by Dra. Rismaya M.,MA, the lecturer of speaking for academic presentation in Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tanjungpura University. She has claimed that the clear pronunciation would bring the audience to the right meaning and the presentation would be more understandable and interesting. Therefore, the pronunciation must be taken into account and need more practice to make it better.

The final aspect in academic speaking presentation is the use of vocabulary along with grammar which tend to be important for the English student to arrange statement. In the academic presentation, the English students are required to show their own argument about the topic. When making the argument, the students need to arrange the sentence or statement carefully by using an appropriate word. That is the vocabulary building is crucial to deliver a good speech. The word choice should be concerned to have meaningful purpose of the statement. Then the grammar also helps the use of word become more effective. For example, the English students can use appropriate form and structure of language to mention an argument or explain the information to the audiences or listeners, so the audiences or listeners can understand better. The academic speaking presentation also can be more sophisticated when the use of vocabulary together with grammar can attract the listeners or audience’s attention.

In brief, topic, pronunciation and vocabulary are three aspects of the academic speaking presentation that should be applied properly. The English students who will deal with this subject should pay more attention to those aspects in order to deliver good presentation. Because the academic presentation is the part of learning, it would be more beneficial to practice more about the aspects and how to improve it.
